Eames Chair Project
by
mapleleaf

A long time ago, I saw a chair and I was in love with it!... months went by and one day I found a cheap chair for sale on craigslist. It was a stretch from the original one, this one had seen better days but it had one thing going for it.. Price!!

Well, I enlisted my beau and contacted the seller to make arrangements for pick up. The seller informed me that she was moving out of state and was having a garage sale the next morning. She would try to hold it for me but there was no guarantee that someone else in her household would sell it to someone else. I was so close to finally getting a chair like the one I always wanted, specially one that worked for my budget.

Next morning, I got up and hit the road with directions on hand to the opposite side of town and determined to find this elusive chair. We got there and almost lost all hope, there were tons of cars parked in the vicinity. For a second I wanted to turn around and hit the road, but I was scanning through the piles of things for sale and looking for the contact person I had spoken to on the phone. Then she appeared and told us the chair was supposed to be there, around, somewhere, let me ask somebody she said. I was thinking OMG. there is no chair, she probably sold it. Suddenly she appeared with the stool and asked us to follow her to get the chair. Awesome!!!
That is how I got to buy the Plycraft Chair below. Now, about the reconstruction project, that was a good one on the books.
I had read about the Eames chair repair and upholstery from forums and blogs. So, after months of contemplating the project at hand we decided to embark on the task and finally do it..
We both decided on cowhide material, we played with the idea of using suede or leather but we wanted something totally different from what it was there before, which was synthetic leather/vinyl like material that had started to disintegrate due to aging.
One of the principal and bothersome problems was the fact that the back seat was not properly secured and the bar was not straight. It always made us feel like we were leaning towards one side more than the other. Also, the cushions had buttons that had gone missing prior to us getting the chair, so we were faced with the possibility of getting or making new buttons.
We were sure that some components, nits and bolts would need to be replaced, specially since some had already fallen apart. We were always careful to keep whatever kept falling and at the end we had to replace at least half of the screws and bolts.
We took it apart and then went to the supply store to get the bolts, screws, etc.
Day #1 Sanding the pieces, back, head, seat, stool, and 2 arm rest.
Day #2 Applying stain on the wood pieces then Poly
Day #3 Cutting the cowhide material and attaching it, apply buttons.

Editorial

Slave is an international online photography, art, culture and fashion magazine established in December 2010, published quarterly.

http://slavemag.com

Issue #4 features some of the work I have been involved recently. I love collaborating on meaningful projects and this editorial was really special to me. First, we try using some of the local talent and designers that are emerging and put together a series of looks for this fashion spread. Photographer Akin Abayomi chose the model (Rachel) from ModelMayhem a well known internet site where models and photographers interact. Yes, he could have gone with agency models but he chose to collaborate on this project with someone that represents what Austin Texas really is about and in this case it was Ms. Rachel, the lucky look. She turned out to be an excellent choice, her bubbly personality and enchanting charisma tune the music for the shoot.

Make up and Hair was done by the multi-talented Allison of Wigs and Make up. Allison is not only an excellent make up artist for photoshoots, she is also an instructor at the University of Texas. Did I mention she also writes?. well she does, and here is her last book

The wardrobe was selected by Dreadhead, he individually selected each one of the looks and piece together the accessories needed for the shoot. Each look was independent of each other and at the same time complementary to the whole concept. The one thing bonding them together was the use of black thought the entire shoot.

The shoot was envisioned as a simplistic way of saying "When everything is black think back and add a sprinkle of color"

I supported the awesome crew by coordinating the looks, the timing, sequencing and scheduling and sourcing of some of the items. I assisted during the photoshoot and I was in charge of selecting the post-process of the final images. The editing was done by our talented friends at MAKE IT WORK Productions

Here is the publication feel free to check it out and enjoy!

Party Dressing – New York Vs Paris | Garance Dor

Party Dressing – New York Vs Paris | Garance Dor

Let me say just one thing : Parisians don’t party like New Yorkers party. And vice versa. After extensive analysis, I’ve got a theory… It comes down to this:

The Parisian night is private. The New York night is public.

I had to deal with the cultural gap even before I moved to New York. It happened when, one night, I was out at the Boom Boom Room and I told a friend about my project of moving here.

And then the next day, bam. It was up on a magazine’s blog. Someone had overheard our conversation and simply reproduced it. A few hours later, it had raced around the web and I only found out because I started getting tons of texts saying things like,

“Congrats on your move to NYC, Garance!”

And that’s how a totally personal conversation that really, after thinking about it, shouldn’t interest anyone but my friends and I, became a piece of news. That’ll teach me to go have drinks at the Boom Boom Room. I was shocked !

Because that kind of thing would never happen in Paris. Those types of blogs don’t even exist there. We don’t have Page 6 (the super gossip page in the New York Post that everybody reads). Plus in Paris, the concept of Vie PrivĂ©e really means something. Which isn’t to say that gossip doesn’t circulate, but it stays pretty hush hush and in smaller circles.

The night is secret. And I can tell you, lots of things happen…

New York is different. New York is a planet onto itself. New York has its own celebrities, designers, entrepreneurs, sons of, wives of, all of which you wouldn’t ever talk about in Paris.

New York has its own magazines and each of the parties has photographers. Every party is dissected and analyzed like it was the event of the century – Who was there? And with whom? What dress was she wearing? What shoes, what jewelry? Wait what?! The same as last time? OH MY GOD, fashion faux-pas! I can’t believe it!!! Noooo, she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring? Wait, zooooooooooom in, let’s take a closer look!!!

New York invented socialites. You go out to be seen and take part.

The result in terms of fashion is two very distinct styles.

When the Parisian goes out, her goal is to be cool. The coolest.

It’s that simple. She’s not going to a party unless her friends are invited too and would rather die then be seen without her posse. You don’t intermingle too much in Paris. You don’t network and if you do, you do so super discretely: networking means you need others, and that’s just not cool. Don’t even try to do a seating arrangement at your dinner. People will just sit with their friends. She does everything she can to not be in pictures, because wanting to get your picture taken is the opposite of cool. She dresses in her eternal outfit of jeans and high heels and her hair down.
Because really, getting dressed just to go out, pfffff. She’s got better things to do.

But really, in truth, she spends an hour on each smokey-eye. But what she’s really into is having fun in small groups, pretending she isn’t looking at the other little groups over there in the corner. Not surprising that the most popular clubs in Paris are small, darkly lit, and full of hidden nooks.

The New Yorker on the other hand, when she goes out, it’s because she wants to be seen.

She gets her outfit ready a week ahead of time. She borrows a dress from a friend in PR who can’t wait for the next morning to count the number of mentions her little protĂ©gĂ©e got her. She books a hairdresser and makeup artist to give her the perfect effortless look and makes sure that she gets to the party with all the right people. If she can’t find them, she just goes alone.

Cause anyway, she’s just there to meet people and shine. So there, even better to be alone in the picture.

That’s not to say that everyone doesn’t have a good time, from one side of the Atlantic to the other. In New York just as in Paris, people like to party and people do it well. And when they all meet, that’s when it gets even more fun.

But you have to know a few of society’s codes before heading out into the night. Or else, in Paris, you’ll end up getting there in an evening gown just like it said to on the invitation (half the girls show up in jeans, the other half in mini-skirts) or in New York, you’ll get there in a tracksuit when it’s says “casual” (and everyone else is in cocktail dress, updos abounding).

Yeah, all that’s a little bit of a caricature, but it’s happened to me enough times that it’s not far off. It never stops me from enjoying myself. Still, it’s happened more than once where I’ve looked a liiiiiiittle out of place.

Okay, next time, I’ll tell you my secret to always making it work. Yep, just like that, bam! Works every time.

PS : What kind of party girl are you ? More of a Parisienne or a New Yorker ?

Interesting read

Weekend

The weekend is finally here and there is no rest for the wicked.. If one wants to have great results on anything then there is the need to prepare and research the different possibilities available. I started the prop selection about a week ago, some items have already arrived but most are still in transit from their respective origins.
I still have to buy some more items, products and pieces to create an amazing ensemble of art/fashion for the next shoot.
When is the next shoot?.. well that's a good question as I am still in the prepping stages and the boss has not declared the date.. So that's good for me. I love to have datelines but I also work good when given the right to manage my own time. I still got some ideas about what I may want to incorporate but at this point I don't want to overdo it.
Stay tune for perhaps some updates..
